About us

Section for Sign Linguistics was created in the structure of the Faculty of Polish Studies, University of Warsaw on June 1, 2010. The main goal of the Section is to describe the complex grammar of PJM (polski język migowy - Polish Sign Language), as well as to conduct research on visual-spatial communication from the perspective of general and comparative linguistics. The Section's activities include, among others, the compilation and linguistic analysis of a visual corpus of PJM, the preparation and publication of books and papers devoted to various aspects of visual-spatial communication (including educational materials), and the organization of academic conferences (including international ones). The Section's activities would not be possible without earlier, pioneering research by Prof. Marek Świdziński, who was the first to direct the attention of Polish linguists to issues related to the communication of the Deaf.
