28th June 2017 – Gathering of the Polish Parliamentary Group for Deaf Affairs

On 27 June, Dr. Paweł Rutkowski delivered a paper entitled “Polish Sign Language (PJM) and signed Polish (SJM) from the linguistic perspective” to a session of the Polish Parliamentary Group for Deaf Affairs. This presentation made by the head of our Section for Sign Linguistics to Polish members of parliament served as a prelude to a discussion on the need to amend the “Act on Sign Language and Other Means of Communication” involving representatives of several ministries, organizations and associations of Deaf people and CODAs, and the chairwoman of the Group, MP Kornelia Wróblewska. We hope that this meeting will represent a step towards fostering even broader collaboration among all those interested in the communication rights of sign language users.

22nd June 2017 – FEAST conference

Magda Schromová from the Section for Sign Linguistics and Justyna Kotowicz from the Pedagogical University in Kraków participated in the conference ‘Formal and Experimental Advances in Sign Language Theory’ (FEAST) held in Iceland. On 21 June they presented their poster entitled “Executive function in deaf native signing children: the relationship of language experience and cognition”, developed in collaboration with Bencie Woll, Rosalinda Herman, Maria Kielar-Turska and Joanna Łacheta. 22nd June 2017 – FEAST conference

20th June 2017 – OHBM conference

We are pleased to announce that during The Organization for Human Brain Mapping (OHBM) Annual Meeting" a prestigious gathering that will be held in Vancouver, Canada, two poster sessions will be presented, summing up collaborative work done by the Section for Sign Linguistics (University of Warsaw), the Nencki Institute (Polish Academy of Sciences) and the Institute of Psychology (Jagiellonian University):

11th May 2017 – Prof. Świdziński Honored

We are very pleased to announce that today Prof. Marek Świdziński was honored with the prestigious "Jan Baudouin de Courtenay Award" for his lifetime contribution to science, particularly in the area of Polish Sign Language (PLM) research. For many members of the Section for Sign Linguistics, Professor Świdziński is not only a master of his craft and a teacher, but also a reliable friend. We extend our heartfelt congratulations to him on this honor!

10th May 2017 – "The Right to Language"

We are proud to announce that the lecture "The Right to Language" presented by Dr. Pawel Rutkowski, to inaugurate the 2016/2017 academic year at the University of Warsaw, has been published in volume LXVI of the journal "Zeszyty Instytutu Problemów Współczesnej Cywilizacji". 30th April 2017 – Linguistics Prague 2017

On 27-29 April, Joanna Filipczak and Monika Krawczyk along with Magda Schromová and Justyna Kotowicz represented the Section for Sign Linguistics at the "Linguistics Prague 2017" conference, presenting two posters: "Grammatical status of the pointing sign ‘THIS’ in Polish Sign Language (PJM) – corpus-based study", and "Relationship between executive function and sign language skills in bilingual deaf children".

18th April 2017 – collaboration with the Laboratory of Brain Imaging at the Nencki Institute

Collaborative efforts continue between the Section for Sign Linguistics at the University of Warsaw and the Laboratory of Brain Imaging at the Nencki Institute of Experimental Biology. In April, at the Learning and Plasticity (LaP) conference in Äkäslompolo, Finland, a poster was presented entitled "Time-course of semantic processing in hearing adults during Polish Sign Language acquisition: A longitudinal study". It discusses the initial results of a study on the acquisition of PJM by hearing persons. Researchers from the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and San Diego State University have collaborated on the project together with colleagues in Warsaw. The authors of the poster presented in Finland include Anna Banaszkiewicz, Jacek Matuszewski, Łukasz Bola, Michał Szczepanik, Bartosz Kossowski, Paweł Rutkowski, Marcin Szwed, Karen Emmorey, Katarzyna Jednoróg, and Artur Marchewka.

13th April 2017 – Easter break

The Section for Sign Linguistics would like to wish everyone a wonderful Easter holiday! May this spring time be a time for rest and memorable moments with your loved ones.
The entire PLM team is taking a short break to recharge its batteries, but will be back next week with renewed energy, ready to tackle all projects.

8th April 2017 – Meeting of the "Language and Rights" Group

On 6 April in Brussels, Dr. Paweł Rutkowski took part in the meeting of the "Language and Rights" Working Group of the European Language Council. At his request, the group has decided to expand their work on the linguistic rights of immigrants, which is the focus of the group’s research, to include those of the signing community.
